What is an Accessibility Remediation Roadmap?

An Accessibility Remediation Roadmap is a structured document used to identify, track, and resolve accessibility issues in a product or service.

It is typically developed jointly by the customer (purchaser) and the vendor (supplier), based on findings from accessibility documentation such as a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) or Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR).

The roadmap translates high-level VPAT claims into specific, actionable fixes, clearly identifying:

  • what the issue is
  • where it occurs in the product
  • who is responsible for fixing it
  • when it will be resolved
  • how the fix will be validated.

Who completes this document?

This document is completed collaboratively by:

  • Vendor representatives (e.g., product, engineering, accessibility teams)
  • Customer representatives (e.g., procurement, accessibility, product owners)

When is a Remediation Roadmap required?

A Remediation Roadmap should be created when accessibility issues have been identified and remediation is required, including when:

  • A Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) or Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) includes 'Does Not Support' or 'Partially Supports' ratings
  • Accessibility testing identifies barriers in key user flows
  • The product is being procured, renewed, or expanded
  • Accessibility risk needs to be formally managed and tracked

How does this relate to an Access Plan?

  • A Remediation Roadmap focuses on fixing the product.
  • An Access Plan focuses on providing access in the meantime.

If accessibility issues cannot be resolved immediately, an Access Plan should be in place alongside this roadmap to ensure users with disabilities can still access the same information or services.
